Module 6 · Topic 4
Trading questions test whether you can apply the Rules of Bursa Malaysia Securities and the Participating Organisations' Trading Manual to a live order: which phase it falls in, whether the ATS will accept it, how short sales are controlled, how margin accounts are policed and when a Direct Business Transaction needs extra reporting. Expect short scenarios with prices, times and percentages. The exam is open book, so the marks go to candidates who know where each figure sits and can apply it fast.

Rule 8.02 leaves trading sessions and phases to the Exchange; the Trading Manual (paras 2.3 to 2.5) fills in the detail. Each session opens with a pre-opening auction and the day ends with pre-closing, a closing auction and Trading at Last.

Closing price: the last Theoretical Closing Price; failing that, the last done price; failing that, the Reference Price.
Trap: Candidates confuse Fill-and-Kill with Fill-or-Kill, and forget that Bursa GTD and GTC orders are withdrawn at the end of the last cum day, on designation and on suspension, but not on a halt.
Takeaway: Fix the phase first; the phase decides which orders are allowed, at what price, and whether they can match.
Rule 8.13 bars board-lot and odd-lot orders outside the Upper and Lower Limit Prices. Rule 8.13A adds Dynamic Limits during main trading, and Rule 8.13B adds Last Price Limits during pre-closing. The Trading Manual sets the figures.
| Control | From RM1.00 | Below RM1.00 | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static limit (normal day) | plus or minus 30% | plus or minus 30 sen | Reference Price |
| Static limit (first listing day) | -30% / +400% | -30 sen / +400% or 30 sen, whichever higher | Issue or offer price |
| Dynamic Price Limit | plus or minus 8% | plus or minus 8 sen | Last done price |
| Last Price Limit | plus or minus 8% | plus or minus 8 sen | Last done price |
Trap: Reading the first-day '400% above' as '400% of'. For an IPO at RM0.50 the Upper Limit Price is RM2.50, not RM2.00.
Takeaway: Static 30% controls entry; dynamic 8% controls matching; Last Price Limits govern pre-closing and are never uplifted.
