Module 7 · Topic 1
Section 1 of Module 7 can carry up to 60% of the paper, and this topic is its foundation: why statements matter to investors, the MFRS framework and its concepts, the auditor's report, the four primary statements and what goes in each, and a first look at group accounts. Expect short extracts and 'where does this item go' or 'what is the effect' questions.

Listed Malaysian companies report under MFRS, issued by MASB. Statements rest on going concern and the accrual basis; useful information is relevant and faithfully represented, enhanced by comparability, verifiability, timeliness and understandability. Main Market companies announce quarterly reports within two months of each quarter end and issue the annual report within four months of the year end.
| Opinion | When |
|---|---|
| Unmodified | True and fair view |
| Qualified | Material, not pervasive misstatement or scope limit |
| Adverse | Material and pervasive misstatement |
| Disclaimer | Cannot obtain sufficient evidence; possible effects pervasive |
Trap: reading a clean opinion as a guarantee, or confusing adverse (found misstatement) with disclaimer (no evidence).
Takeaway: MASB writes the rules; the auditor reports on true and fair, not on the future.
Statement of financial position: current and non-current assets and liabilities, equity. Statement of comprehensive income: revenue, cost of sales, operating profit, finance costs, tax, OCI. Statement of changes in equity: profit, OCI, share issues, dividends. Statement of cash flows: operating, investing, financing.
Examples: sales RM900k with opening inventory 100k, purchases 600k and closing 120k give gross profit RM320k; PBT 160 + depreciation 30 − receivables 20 − inventory 15 + payables 10 − tax 40 = operating cash RM125m.

Trap: adding closing inventory to cost of sales, or getting working-capital signs wrong in the cash flow.
Takeaway: profit is accruals; cash flow undoes them.
